THE APPROACH
Facts, feedback
and judgement.
I start with the job a reader needs the fridge to do. I compare the exact model’s layout, installation, controls and upkeep, then read identifiable owner reports for details that are easy to miss in a specification table.
For the photographs, author portrait and original illustrations, see the dedicated image credits and permissions register.
Product factsManufacturer pages, instructions, certification records and exact retailer listings establish the model and stated specifications. Material conflicts remain visible.
Owner experiencesSelected customer reports provide context about storage access and ownership. I check model names, variant labels and manufacturer replies because review feeds can mix products.
Editorial choices“I’d choose” explains my recommendation for a buyer’s situation. Owner anecdotes remain attributed. This guide does not present CompactChill temperature, noise or usable-capacity measurements.
Owner reports can refer to earlier revisions. They are individual accounts, not a representative survey, and their experiences may differ from yours. A product page or purchase control also does not guarantee delivery, condition or future availability.

- The linked WHD manual names WHD-113FSS1 and specifies three inches at each side and four inches behind. It does not quantify an overhead gap. The US product page gives 18.5 × 19.9 × 33 inches; retailer size fields differ. Manufacturer product material and ENERGY STAR record 3553997 disagree on defrost classification. Follow the instructions supplied with the exact unit; do not infer a frost-free freezer.

- The recovered official BR-1211DS manual specifies four inches at each side and six behind, but does not quantify a top gap. It describes automatic off-cycle defrost and manual removal of persistent frost. This manual describes a 121-can arrangement while the current product page advertises 136; check the supplied revision before transferring its packing layout. No complete three-axis fit is inferred.

- The Midea-authored manual names MERM33S1ABB and MERM33S1AST; the copy is retailer-hosted. It lists 18.6 × 17.6 × 34.0 inches, versus 33.9 inches tall on the webpage. Its installation diagram requires more than 100 mm at both sides, rear and top. Our finder uses four inches (101.6 mm) for each gap and the taller manual height, producing 26.6 × 21.6 × 38 inches before door access. The manual includes a power-off defrost procedure; the automatic-defrost webpage wording still conflicts with the specification sheet. Confirm the shipped revision. Additional records are linked below so conflicting fields can be compared.

- The official page identifies GLR31TBEER as Bebop Blue and places the retained GLR31TBEER2_45° image beside unsuffixed cover and numbered open-door images in that color gallery. The number is an image-sequence label, not evidence of a different appliance revision. The linked manual explicitly names GLR31TBEER, gives 19.17 × 23.31 × 35.16 inches, 2.2 cu. ft. fresh / 0.9 freezer, 58.42 lb net and 120 V / 60 Hz. Page 4 specifies one-half inch at each side and one-and-one-half inches above and behind. Use those manufacturer installation figures rather than a conflicting certification dimension field. The calculated envelope excludes door-opening space; the exact Amazon offer was unavailable when checked. Additional records are linked below so conflicting fields can be compared.

Food temperature and dial settings
Used for refrigerator and freezer temperature targets, thermometer checks, airflow and prompt food handling. Model manuals govern control operation; FDA guidance governs the food-safety points. A thermostat position is not treated as a measured temperature.
Food after a cooling interruption
The temperature article directs uncertain time/temperature cases to authoritative food-safety guidance. It does not judge food safety by smell or appearance, or promise safety after an unknown interruption.
Annual energy and electricity estimates
Published annual kWh values are kept separate from measured consumption. The calculator uses annual kWh × cents per kWh ÷ 100; monthly cost divides that result by 12. Its starting tariff is an example.
Midea WHD-113FSS1 has a material defrost classification conflict: manufacturer material describes manual defrost while the exact ENERGY STAR record below lists automatic. Both give a 270 kWh annual figure. The shipped model’s current instructions must resolve upkeep; the site does not promise a frost-free freezer.
Installation dimensions and working space
GE and Danby installation examples combine exact cabinet measurements and stated ventilation gaps. Door opening is separate. Midea WHD, BCRK17B, Whynter, MERM33S1ABB and Galanz do not have complete enough verified fit data for the dimension-based finder. Missing values are not treated as zero.
Moving, standing and setup
GE’s moving guidance specifically says compact models should remain upright. The BCRK17 manual gives its own instructions after tilt or horizontal positioning. These examples are not combined into a universal waiting-time rule.
Use the exact supplied instructions and transport history. The ownership guide separates moving, standing, start-up and the first temperature check.
Defrosting and cleaning
The BCRK17 instructions support unplugging, managing meltwater, avoiding sharp tools and electrical heating, and using compatible gentle cleaning materials. The guide does not transfer a specific cleaning solution, frost threshold or interval to all models.
Midea WHD defrost descriptions conflict across records. GE’s partial automatic description does not remove freezer maintenance. Newair’s manual permits a frost-removal process and excludes perishable-food use.
Thermoelectric and compressor cooling
The Cooluli Classic page provides an example of a thermoelectric product whose claimed cooling is relative to ambient temperature. It is used to explain a category distinction, not as a reviewed or recommended accessory. Promotional claims about specialised contents, silence or efficiency are not adopted as measured evidence.
The hypothetical subtraction example in the explainer is clearly labelled and is not a product test. Indoor compressor models also have model-specific ambient and installation limits.
Beverage layouts and food-storage limits
Whynter’s exact BR-1211DS specifications take precedence over generic FAQ wording: the model has wire shelves and a non-reversible door. Can counts are manufacturer packing claims.
The Newair AB-1200 manual prohibits perishable food despite broader website marketing. Shelf count and warranty wording also conflict. The reviews keep those questions visible and assess these beverage units for sealed drinks.
Dorm rules are institution-specific
Iowa State’s policy and the University of Rhode Island’s packing guidance demonstrate why there is no universal dorm size allowance. Their published capacity limits differ. The reader must check the current rules for the assigned residence; these links do not approve a model for another university or room.
Bedroom sound and placement
No controlled noise ranking has been established for the reviewed models. Manufacturer sound claims with different or unspecified conditions and isolated owner impressions are not treated as comparable measurements. Exact installation instructions remain the basis for ventilation and levelling advice.
Budget ceilings and shopping evidence
The $50, $60, $100, $150 and $200 caps are grouped into one guide. A Lowe’s snapshot for the exact black BCRK17B showed $148.35 at item level with a purchase option. Tax, delivery fees and explicit new condition were not verified, so this is not a complete new-unit under-$150 recommendation. Target’s matching black BCRK17B listing also showed $168.99 through My Home Products, leaving $31.01 below $200 before charges; its explicit condition and delivered total were not established. These amounts are research references, not live Amazon prices or future-season guarantees.
Fresh checks identified separate Buy New options sold and shipped by Amazon.com for WHD-113FSS1 and BCRK17B, alongside Amazon Resale offers. GE, Whynter and Newair showed retail purchase controls. Danby showed buying options without a verified selected offer; MERM33S1ABB and GLR31TBEER showed unavailable messages. A listing’s resale box does not describe its separate new offer. Address-specific delivery and final totals were not checked.
